A Shared Vision: Procter & Gamble on Supporting Nature-Based Solutions
A conversation on long-term impact, collaboration and corporate leadership for nature.
Why does Procter & Gamble support Nature United?
At Procter & Gamble (P&G), we believe it is important to help protect and restore critical ecosystems that help sustain our operations, support the well-being of people and help protect the long-term health of our planet. This aligns with Nature United’s mission to create solutions for people and nature by building partnerships to protect lands and waters and ensure nature is the foundation of healthy communities, economies and future opportunities. Both organizations recognize the power of collaboration to drive transformational change.
How has collaboration with Nature United helped advance P&G's nature goals?
P&G set a target to protect, restore or improve greater than 1.5 million acres of land by 2030. We support a portfolio of projects, one of which is led by Nature United, focusing on innovative approaches and partnerships to support forest management in British Columbia (B.C.). These landscapes encompass vibrant coastal ecosystems, extensive watersheds and vast forests, characterized by rich biodiversity. The region presents a unique opportunity to advance sustainable forestry practices, integrating ecosystem health, biodiversity conservation and community well-being.
Indigenous Nations and communities are at the forefront of efforts to protect these ecosystems and are working alongside Nature United, provincial and federal governments, and industry partners to create solutions that blend conservation with local economic development. Nature United’s B.C. Program includes Indigenous-led landscape protection and sustainable management in the Clayoquot Sound and Great Bear Rainforest regions. These efforts aim to advance Indigenous land use visions which requires collaboration with the Province of B.C.
How does P&G envision the long-term impact of its efforts?
One of the principles applied to selecting projects for support is prioritizing those that incentivize and maintain long-term impacts beyond the life of the project and/or P&G support. Success looks like more resilient ecosystems in landscapes important to people, climate, biodiversity and P&G.
Nature United’s B.C. Program exemplifies this approach by combining a commitment to long-term outcomes with a clear, evidence-based strategy for achieving maximum impact. Their model emphasizes collaboration with Indigenous and local communities, ensuring that conservation efforts are rooted in local knowledge and governance. By investing in capacity-building and fostering enduring partnerships, Nature United helps create the conditions for sustained ecological and social benefits. Their work demonstrates how aligning scientific rigor with community-led stewardship can lead to scalable, lasting change — making them a strong example of the kind of initiative that aligns with P&G’s vision for resilient, high-impact environmental efforts.
Recognizing P&G's efforts in the corporate sustainability space, what advice would you give to other corporations considering deeper investment in nature?
For those considering a deeper investment in nature, P&G suggests collaborating with credible, on-the-ground experts such as Nature United and prioritizing efforts that take an integrated approach to nature conservation, restoration or improved management. Efforts should look to deliver long-term outcomes with benefits for people, climate and biodiversity. It is also essential that stakeholders and rightsholders, including Indigenous Peoples and local communities, are engaged throughout the project life cycle and, ideally, are integral to the design and implementation of the work.
